Deciding what to wear for a photography session can feel daunting, but I’m here to help! As a photographer, I’ve seen how the right outfit can elevate your images and make you feel more confident in front of the camera. Here are 8 simple tips to guide you:

Reflect Your Personal Style

Choose outfits that showcase who you are. Whether casual, dressy, or a mix, authenticity is key. Incorporate your favorite colors and patterns that make you feel good. Don't try to wear something you won't feel comfortable in. This will show in your pictures for sure!

Consider the Location

Think about where we’ll be shooting. Soft, earthy tones work great for parks, while bold colors or fun prints can pop in urban settings. Aim to harmonize with your surroundings while standing out in your unique way. Even considering the season when deciding what to wear. Darker more subdued tones in the Fall and brighter pastels in the Spring often look the best.

Prioritize Comfort

If you feel great in your outfit, it will show in your photos. When we’re having fun and capturing genuine moments, you’ll appear more natural and at ease. Be sure the wear the outfit once before the shoot when possible. This way you'll know how the fabric feels and moves with you.

Layer for Depth

Layering adds dimension to your outfit and gives you options without needing a full change. A jacket or scarf can enhance your look and help you stay comfortable with changing temperatures. Do you have a sweater or favorite jacket we can incorporate into your outfit which in turn could be used to help you feel more comfortable and create more posing options.

Bring Accessories

Accessories are a great way to add personality and variety to your photos! Simple items like a hat, scarf, or a statement piece of jewelry can completely transform a look without requiring an outfit change. They also give us more creative options to play with during the session. Whether it’s a favorite necklace, a fun pair of sunglasses, a favorite watch, or a cozy wrap for cooler weather, accessories can add that extra touch of style and help tell your story. Just remember, less is often more—keep it balanced so your accessories enhance rather than overshadow your look.

Bring Options

If you’re unsure about what to wear, don’t hesitate to ask. If you've picked a collection with tiem for outfit changes then bring a couple of options! Having different outfits on hand gives us the flexibility to mix things up during the session. Maybe you want one look that’s casual and another that’s a bit more dressed up. Or perhaps you’re deciding between a bold color and something more neutral. Bringing multiple outfits allows us to adjust based on the lighting, location, or mood, and it can help you feel more confident knowing you’ve got choices. Plus, it’s fun to try out different looks and see what works best on camera!

Choose Subtle Patterns

Patterns can add interest and texture to your outfit, but it’s best to keep them subtle. Bold or busy patterns can sometimes distract from your face or the overall mood of the photo. Instead, opt for soft, understated prints like small florals, stripes, or polka dots that won’t overpower the image. The goal is to enhance your look without taking the spotlight away from the main subject—you! Subtle patterns add just the right amount of visual appeal, making your photos timeless and balanced.

Create Movement

Adding movement to your outfit can bring energy and life to your photos. Flowy dresses, skirts, or even loose scarves can catch the wind and create beautiful, dynamic shots. For guys, jackets (think jean jacket as much as suit jacket) create a great way to create movement. Movement helps make your photos feel more natural and less posed, capturing those candid moments of joy. It also adds depth and interest to the images, making them feel more alive. Whether it’s a twirl in a flowy dress or simply walking, incorporating movement is a fun way to bring your photos to life and make them feel more authentic.
